You may have heard StoryCorps’ powerful interviews on Public Radio. In partnership with Abortion Stories, the Peabody-award winning oral history organization recorded participants’ abortion stories in a private temporary booth in Soho on May 7 and October 10-11. Recordings are sent to the Library of Congress.

In our initiative with StoryCorps in May, participants said they felt a sense of freedom in sharing their stories. No matter how strongly we may believe in reproductive choice, it can be hard for us to feel safe to talk about our experiences. Recording our stories can be a wonderful way to share our lives with people we care about, reclaim our rights, and contribute to the historical record. When others listen to our stories, it gives a human face to reproductive choice, a reminder that everyone’s life is different and everyone’s body belongs to themselves and no one else.
